- Mazelen is een uiterst besmettelijke virale infectieziekte die wordt overgedragen via de lucht.
- Kinderen jonger dan 10 worden beschouwd als de grootste risicogroep om de ziekte op te lopen.
- 30% van de besmette personen lopen risico op complicaties. Die kunnen gaan van oor- of longinfecties tot ernstigere complicaties die tot een ziekenhuisopname kunnen leiden.
Symptomen
De belangrijkste symptomen van mazelen zijn koorts en huiduitslag (rode vlekken op de huid). Die kunnen
ook gepaard gaan met andere, minder specifieke symptomen: hoesten, een verkoudheid of een oogontsteking.
Wat als u symptomen hebt?
Als uw kind of iemand die u kent symptomen heeft, of bij twijfel:
- Bel uw arts voordat u op raadpleging gaat.
- Voorkom dat de symptomatische persoon rechtstreeks in contact komt met niet-gevaccineerde of kwetsbare personen (zuigelingen, zwangere vrouwen, enz.).
- Breng uw kind niet naar activiteiten of de opvang zonder toestemming van de arts.
- Draag een masker (zowel u als uw kind) als u op raadpleging gaat.
Wie loopt risico op complicaties?
Zij die het hoogste risico lopen op ernstige complicaties door mazelen zijn:
- niet-geïmmuniseerde personen (mensen die geen dosis vaccin kregen of nooit mazelen hebben gehad)
- personen met verlaagde immunocompetentie of een zwak immuunsysteem
- zwangere vrouwen
- zuigelingen (kinderen jonger dan 12 maanden)
Iedereen gevaccineerd, iedereen beschermd!
Een vaccinatie met twee doses van het BMR-vaccin (bof-mazelen-rodehond) is de enige doeltreffende bescherming tegen de ziekte.
• Controleer uw vaccinatiestatus en die van uw kind. In het Belgische vaccinatieschema wordt de eerste dosis op 12 maanden gegeven en de tweede tussen 7 en 9 jaar.
• Mensen die al mazelen hebben gehad (een groot deel van de bevolking geboren voor 1970) of die twee doses van het vaccin hebben gekregen, zijn beschermd en moeten niet meer gevaccineerd worden.
• Mensen die tussen 1970 en 1985 zijn geboren, lopen een grote kans om momenteel onvoldoende beschermd te zijn, aangezien ze misschien maar één dosis vaccin hebben gekregen.
• Neem bij twijfel uw vaccinatieboekjes mee naar uw behandelend arts of kinderarts om de vaccinatiestatus van uw gezin te controleren.
Waar kunt u zich laten vaccineren?
Voor kinderen: bij de behandelend arts, kinderarts, op een zuigelingenconsultatie van Kind en Gezin of via het Centrum voor leerlingenbegeleiding (CLB).
Dit vaccin is gratis verkrijgbaar.
Voor volwassenen: neem contact op met uw behandelend arts.
Voor niet-geïmmuniseerde personen: vaccinatie binnen 72 uur na contact met de ziekte beschermt u ertegen.
