The Brussels Government is proposing a NEW, more SECURE accommodation model.
As of 1 June, 7,000 people have fled the war in Ukraine and found refuge in Brussels. They will probably number 12,000 by the end of the year. This situation involves us all. The Region is in the process of creating 3,600 reception places. It will also help and support citizen hosts: it is calling for new citizen hosts.
Reception
Belgium and the Brussels-Capital Region are doing everything possible to organise the reception of Ukrainian refugees.
When they arrive in Brussels, the priority of these refugees is to find housing, social assistance, a job, but also places in a nursery or at school for their children.
The majority of the population which has fled the war in Ukraine in recent days can benefit from immediate protection status in the European Union. People with this status have access to all the rights of a legally registered foreigner: admission to the labour market, access to social services, etc.
The Brussels reception offices for newcomers Bon and Bapas provide information on living, working and housing in Belgium to people fleeing Ukraine. They also provide individual counselling in their own language or in a language they understand.

Local authorities
Once registration is complete, longer term accommodation is delegated to the municipalities. Fedasil analyses the spaces available in the municipalities and dispatches the Ukrainian nationals to the different Brussels municipalities that can offer accommodation.
Since the beginning of the crisis, the municipal services and the CPAS (public social service centres) in the Brussels-Capital Region have assisted the federal authorities in identifying needs (donations, volunteering, etc.) relating to the Ukrainian crisis to provide the necessary support for people arriving in our country.

Crisis management
The High Official, along with the Mayors and the Brussels Minister-President, triggered the provincial crisis phase on 15 March 2022.
This crisis management mechanism is essential: it enables us to benefit from a general view, analyse in full knowledge of the facts and coordinate the reality on the ground with all the authorities and security and emergency services in Brussels.
As part of the regional phase, a coordination committee has been set up under the aegis of the High Official with the support of Brussels Prevention & Security in order to monitor the situation on the ground via the police and emergency services. The High Official and the BPS services are also organising regular consultations with their partners on specific problems.
In order to have an overall picture of the situation and the on-going developments, the High Official and the BPS services are in constant contact with the National Crisis Center (NCCN), the other provincial Governors, the regional authorities and the municipalities. The BPS services ensure constant monitoring of the situation and also participate in the information unit organised regularly by the NCCN in order to communicate federal information to the different municipalities. Information exchanges, synergy and consultation are the keys to this crisis management in Brussels.
At the request of the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, the High Official, the same as the other provincial governors, participated in the setting up of a database to facilitate emergency accommodation in partnership with the municipalities and the various associations involved in recent days in the largest operation of its kind ever in Brussels.
